Japan Airlines has an interesting offer for visitors to Japan. Customers with an international ticket can purchase cheap domestic tickets called the JAL Japan Explorer Pass.
Prices for domestic tickets are usually quite low depending on destination, but this offer makes it more attractive to fly than using Japan’s convenient railway system.
Some airports in Japan are located quite far from the city center and it makes more sense to travel by rail but when it comes to the overall cost, train tickets like the Nozomi Super Express (fastest option between Tokyo and Osaka) are very expensive and not included in the Japan Rail Pass option. As such flying can be attractive.
There is a map published that shows the different routes and prices according to distance. The prices are very reasonable as they are fixed but capacity controlled.
Searching the flight availability was easy. We did a one-way Tokyo to Osaka and the rates shown as advertised JPY7560 or MYR 257 excluding the airport taxes.
At the booking form, you will need to input your international ticket number for verification.
You can also upgrade yourself to a premium class using the JAL Airport Upgrade at the standby check-in counter, subject to seat availability. Upgrades to Business Class cost a fixed JPY1000 and First Class JPY8000. You can upgrade any ticket type on your day of departure.
